The seven 'I am' statements in the book of John reveal just who Jesus is.
1. John 6:35 35 Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.
John 6:35 comes after Jesus had fed 5000 people who had been following Him with only 5 loaves of bread and two fish. In this verse Jesus tells us that if we accept Him we will never feel spiritual hunger or thirst. He also tells us that if seek Him we shall find Him yet we ourselves must seek Him. He compares Himself to the bread to emphasis how we must absorb His teachings and His lifestyle. He also says that when we turn ourselves towards Him we receive the "bread of life" referring to how we shall receive eternal life.
3. John 10:9 9I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture.
In John 10:9 Jesus tells us how He is the door to eternal life. Jesus is the door to a relationship with God through His sacrifice which allowed our sins to be forgiven. He is also the door to forgiveness and most importantly salvation. Acts 14 tells us that "there are no side doors, no back door, and no door of any other kind."Jesus is our only door to eternal life and salvation. Having entered the gate we will be able to come and go as we please in a state of content. The last bit of this passage holds reference to Psalm 23:2 "He makes me lie down in green pastures" and is a reference to Heaven. It is also interesting as Jesus who is frequently referred to as the shepherd and we His sheep because sheep do not lie down unless free of all fear, with Jesus and in the Kingdom we will be free of all fear.
2. John 8:12 12When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
In John 8:12 Jesus tells us He is the light of the world and if follow Him we will never walk in darkness. This light is Jesus' holiness and when we accept Him we are removed from the darkness of sin. This light is also a spiritual light which allows us to see the spiritual truth that Jesus brings eternal life. This spiritual truth also allows us to see that Jesus is the answer to all of our problems and that when we face troubles we should seek His light. When we seek His light we are able to be enlightened that we must bring our troubles to Him.
4. John 10:11 11“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
In John 10:11 Jesus tells us He is the good shepherd. A shepherd is responsible for His sheep and must look after them and lead them. The owner has hired the shepherd because he does not expect the sheep to look after themselves. Jesus tells us that He is good at leading and looking after His sheep or us. The difference between Jesus and the normal shepherd is that Jesus gives His life for His sheep.
